The provisions of Section 9(3) of the Pension Act 2004 which makes it mandatory for all government and other organizations to institute a Group Life Assurance Scheme for their staff.

You may wish to recall that the old Unified Pension Scheme ended on June 30, 2007, hence the need for a new scheme effective July 2007. The implication of not embracing the new scheme means that in case of unexpected, the employees of the High Court will not be provided for and compensated under the Death-in-Service benefit scheme. This no doubt leaves the dependants of such employees helpless after the death of their breadwinners.

Also, against the provisions of Sections 64 and 65 of the Insurance Act 2003, the vast assets of the courts, including buildings, equipment, vehicles, etc are left uninsured and are thereby being exposed to high risk of loss.
